Advent: A Modest Proposal for Peace

When we ran shelters, our Community and volunteers were many in number. We ate dinner every night together at a long table in an old fellowship hall building. We collected posters with radical sayings especially regarding social justice and peace. Note: this was in the 1980s.

One such poster was not all that radical: it had a White woman and a Black woman from South Africa hugging and it said, "A Modest Proposal for Peace : Let the Christians of the world agree that they will not kill each other."
40 years later, Christians still cannot agree to not kill each other. Ukraine and Russia. Coups in Latin America sponsored by Christians on Christians. The Christian population in Iraq, Palestine, and Jordan have dwindled from attacks and wars sponsored by Christians.
The atomic bombing of Nagasaki virtually wiped out the Christian population of Japan. In fact the bombers used the church as a landmark to drop the bomb to do the most damage.
Throughout history, missionaries, priests, and Christians spread like wildfire all over this world…ALL OVER IT. Conquering, massacring, and torturing to force the heathens to Christianity. They also did good things like education, hospitals, etc. but mostly to convert people to Christianity…then we, who are Christians, started killing each other.
If we could agree that we as Christians would not kill each other it would end most conflicts and wars, because those of us who claim Christianity as our faith are many and we are everywhere.
We actually might have peace.

Cuando manejamos refugios para personas sin casa en los EEUU, nuestra Comunidad y nuestros voluntarios eran muchos. Cenábamos juntos todas las noches en una larga mesa en un antiguo edificio de la Comunidad. Coleccionábamos carteles con frases radicales, sobre todo relacionados con la justicia social y la paz. Nota: esto ocurría en los años ochenta.
Uno de esos carteles no era tan radical: mostraba a una mujer blanca y a una negra de Sudáfrica abrazadas y decía: "Una modesta propuesta de paz: que los cristianos del mundo acuerden que no se matarán unos a otros".
40 años después, los cristianos siguen sin ponerse de acuerdo para no matarse unos a otros. Ucrania y Rusia. Golpes de Estado en América Latina patrocinados por cristianos contra cristianos. La población cristiana en Irak, Palestina y Jordania ha disminuido por ataques y guerras patrocinadas por cristianos.
El bombardeo atómico de Nagasaki prácticamente acabó con la población cristiana de Japón. De hecho, los bombarderos utilizaron la iglesia como punto de referencia para lanzar la bomba y causar el mayor daño.
A lo largo de la historia, misioneros, sacerdotes y cristianos se extendieron como la pólvora por todo el mundo... POR TODO EL MUNDO. Conquistando, masacrando y torturando para forzar a los paganos al cristianismo. También hicieron cosas buenas como educación, hospitales, etc. pero sobre todo para convertir a la gente al cristianismo...entonces nosotros, que somos cristianos, empezamos a matarnos unos a otros.
Si nos pusiéramos de acuerdo en que los cristianos no nos mataremos unos a otros, se acabarían la mayoría de los conflictos y las guerras, porque los que afirmamos que el cristianismo es nuestra fe somos muchos y estamos en todas partes.
Podríamos tener paz.
Imagínate.
