Nicaragua is in the heart of the Americas, a country of nearly 7 million which has been battered by natural disasters – averaging XX – and compounded by human disasters: 50,000 were killed under a cruel 40-year dictatorship that lasted until 1979. During the 1980s, another 30,000 were killed in the U.S.-funded contra war. Ciudad Sandino had long been the dumping ground for refugees from natural disasters and violence, and as such, was one of the poorest cities in the country. In 1998, Ciudad Sandino received 12,000 refugees from Hurricane Mitch, and a new neighborhood of Nueva Vida was formed with no housing, roads, electricity, water or health care for its residents. We are excited to see the lives of those with whom we work tangibly improving in such a short time. As the situation for the people of Nicaragua has shifted, our programs to respond to their needs must also shift. The population of Ciudad Sandino and Nueva Vida in particular continue to experience deeper poverty, lower levels of education and poorer health outcomes than the population at large. The CDCA first began working in Nicaragua in 1994, when neoliberal governments were in power in the country and there was little access to health care for the country’s poor majority. Even if patients managed to be seen by a doctor, they couldn’t afford to buy the medicines they were prescribed. In community evaluations, health care was consistently identified as the highest priority need for all the communities where we worked. The CDCA responded to this immense need by bringing down medical brigades to see patients; and, following Hurricane Mitch in 1998, set up a full-time health clinic in Nueva Vida. Over the past 25 years, this clinic has provided primary care and medicines for Ciudad Sandino, and has provided increasingly specialized care as the community's needs and priorities have changed. Currently, the Nueva Vida Clinic provides services to around 17,500 patients annually, an average of 70 patients per day in the areas of general medicine dentistry psychology laboratory and pharmacy services. When the Sandinista government came back into office in 2007, health care was declared free again, and the government has continually bettered services for its population around the country. As these services have improved and expanded in Ciudad Sandino, the CDCA has focused its health work in areas not currently being covered by the Ministry of Health (MINSA). The women in this group are young and many did not finish high school. Now that their babies are a little older, they would like to have a skill they could use to make money in the home – setting up a micro business they can run while continuing to look after their children at home. Many in the diverse communities do not have the support of their families, often have spent periods of time as sex workers, struggled with addiction, and have been unable to receive an education. Their goal is to set up a high-end salon at a house that was donated to the CDCA in Managua in a business district. Participants will learn theory and practice of makeup and hair styling and practice these skills on the salon’s clients. Once they have graduated, participants will become mentors for the new class of participants.
