El
Porvenir Coffee Co-op
Through COPROEXNIC we have developed an
extraordinary relationship with one organic coffee cooperative, El Porvenir.
This cooperative has 43 families and is located up near where a devastating
mudslide happened during Hurricane Mitch, when more than
2,000 people were buried alive. El Porvenir did not suffer a mudslide, because
they had not deforested their land.
Working with these amazing people, the CDCA has taken
medical brigades up on an average of six times a year. We help fund a teacher.
One of our volunteer doctors and a volunteer dentist are their primary care givers.
We have helped them get limited solar power and are helping in
getting electricity and water to the top of their mountain…before, during the
dry season they live on one gallon of water per person per day. Imagine if you
can!
El Porvenir produces a very high quality crop of rustic shade grown organic
coffee each year, which is purchased by folks in the U.S. who are dedicated to
helping the co-op. These sales are extremely important for El Porvenir because
they don’t have other cash income for their community – they need this money to
buy clothing and food and to pay for education and medical care for the
community’s 250 members.
Conventional coffee is the most pesticide laden crop in the world. Therefore
organic coffee is best for our bodies, our environment and the growers themselves.
In 2010 El Porvenir began growing registered organic cotton seed
for the organic cotton program and is part of the Fair Labor Practices certification
production chain.
