Healthy Mouths: Special Dental Needs

We have just hired a new dentist for the Nueva Vida Clinic - and we need your help to raise $3,500 right away!

Dr. Inge Muller with patient on health fair day - she saw 20 patients and Ligia saw 21!

Our new dentist’s name is Dr. Inge Muller, she is a recent graduate of the National Autonomous University in Managua. She is very patient and caring with the many children we see in our clinic as well as the older adults with chronic illnesses. We are very pleased to have her on our team, as are our patients. Ligia the hygienist is working well with her and we have a student, Estela, who is helping both of them with prep and sterilizing so that they can move through our patients as efficiently as possible. We have plenty of patients! …

In 2023 we saw 4,957 patients and performed 5,347 procedures.  Of those, 43% were preventative care (cleanings, fluoride and sealants), 40% were restorative care, and 15% were extractions.

We continue to see our 140 chronic care patients twice a year and all the pregnant women for cleanings. We have applied for and hope to receive funding to continue our program for 350 local students.

In 2023 we began a program where teachers from the local schools walk groups of kids over to the Clinic every Thursday morning to have their teeth cleaned, sealants, fluoride treatments and any fillings or extractions needed.

The goal is to bring 350 kids each 2 x per year. While the parents usually don't have the time to bring kids to the dentist, the teachers can and the kids are thrilled to get out of class, so it's a win-win!

The catch is that the funds won’t become available until later this year - meanwhile, classes have just started and the students are anxious to come sit in the dental chair!

Unfortunately, a lot of our older equipment is no longer able to be repaired, and we need to replace it. In order to get students in and start work right away, we need $3,500:

  • Water distiller $405 - for sterilizing

  • Amalgamator $400 - for mixing fillings

  • Hand piece set $600 - drills

  • 6 new sets of tools $345 - to keep working while the other sets are sterilized

  • Supplies to see 350 students once: $1,750

Total of needed as soon as possible: $3,500
